When your mouth is OPEN, so is your business. When your mouth is CLOSED, so is your business.
One of the FIRST questions someone will ask you upon meeting them – whether it’s in a social setting or at a professional networking event – is, “What do you do?”
HOW you answer that question is crucial and can either make or break a first impression. If done correctly and with high impact, you have a fantastic opportunity to do the following:
- Attract new clients and customers
- Begin to build a network base of people who care about what you have to say or a cause you support
- Get noticed in this crazy busy, noisy world
- Establish yourself as one who can communicate your business well
- Set yourself apart from others in your industry
The biggest reason people draw a blank when someone asks them what they do is because they don’t know what people WANT to know about them. Or, they don’t know how to take everything they have to offer and condense it down to 30-60 seconds.
Or, they are afraid of coming across as too “pushy” or too “sales-y” in their self-introduction (also known as networking commercial or elevator pitch).
